China's demand for polypropylene will soon surpass the United States and become the world's largest consumer. The demand for polypropylene in China is only 60% of that in the United States, and this indicator has increased to 95%. The report pointed out that in the next five years, the growth rate of China's polypropylene demand will be twice that of the United States. By 2007, China's polypropylene demand will be 20% higher than that of the United States.
According to industry analysis, Sinopec and PetroChina have now entered the ranks of the world's largest polypropylene producers, Sinopec's polypropylene production capacity ranks second in the world, and PetroChina ranks 13th. PetroChina has signed a licensing agreement with Basell to double its production capacity by 2007.
Although China's polypropylene production capacity is strong, the annual polypropylene demand gap is still as high as 2.5 million tons, which will be supplemented by South Korea, the Middle East and India as potential polypropylene exporters.
In 2002, the global demand for polypropylene reached 34 million tons, an increase of 7% over 2001, with a net increase of 2.2 million tons. It is predicted that the world's total demand for polypropylene will grow at a rate of 6.6% per year, and by 2007, the world's demand for polypropylene will reach more than 47 million tons.
